Nth 2013: The Journey of “Mackinlay’s Shackelton”

One of the cool things about going to the Nth is seeing and getting up close to celebrities from the whisky industry. And this year did not disappoint. Before the main show, I scored a front row seat to Richard Paterson’s Masterclass of the Shakelton whisky!

In the span of an hour, Mr. Paterson spoke on all sorts of things, including Earnest Shakelton’s South Pole expedition, the Shakelton whisky, how to properly taste whisky, the replication process of the Shakelton whisky, and even Tim Jarvis’ replication of the Shakelton expedition. And through it all, we were treated to a dram each of the two batches of the Shakelton whisky. Awesome.

LASC: K&L Exclusive Single Cask Tasting 1

In late February, the LA Scotch Club held its annual tasting of the year’s K&L exclusive bottlings of single malt scotch. For 2013, we were treated to eight outstanding whiskys, including a 42 year old Glenfarclas!

Like last year, David Othenin-Girard, one of the K&L guys who selected the casks, was on hand to provide the educational portion of the night. He shared with us some adventure stories and backstories of each of the bottles, and even threw in some industry gossip. Fun!

SCWC: Stitzel-Weller Tasting 1

This past weekend, the newly formed Southern California Whiskey Club held a fantastic tasting of Stitzel-Weller whiskey juice in Little Tokyo Los Angeles. Advertised as a chance to compare two versions (Stitzel-Weller vs Buffalo Trace) of the much-hyped Pappy Van Winkle 20 year old bourbon, the event was, of course, super packed with excited drinkers.
